Walmart donates $5M to National Museum of African American History and Culture

The donation is ‘part of the company’s continued commitment to advance causes that promote diversity and inclusion,’ the company says

Walmart has made a second large donation to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, the retail giant announced the $5 million grant as “part of the company’s continued commitment to advance causes that promote diversity and inclusion,” according to a Walmart.

The money will be spent on different museum programs, including visitor services and corporate leadership council, the press release said.

“The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a vital institution, deepening everyone’s understanding of our nation’s history through the lens of the African American experience,” Julie Gehrki, vice president of philanthropy at Walmart, said in a statement. “Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have a long history of supporting diversity and inclusion, and we are pleased to support the museum as they continue to build out programs to advance their mission.”

Walmart had previously donated $5 million to themuseum, the only one of the Smithsonian’s 19 institutions devoted to African American history and culture, in 2010 to help fund its construction.

Since it opened in 2016, the museum has had more than 7 million visitors.

Because Walmart donated money to the museum before it opened, the retail company has been named as a Founding Cornerstone Donor by the museum, according to the museum’s website.

Other companies that were named as founding donors include Target, The Boeing Company, GE and 3M.
